Programmes

IPC’s programmes help postal operators defend existing businesses and expand into growth areas. IPC offers its members insight into market and regulatory developments and provides a framework for networking and knowledge sharing. Our sustainability programme aims to reduce the postal sector’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

Postal sector sustainability

IPC is working to systematically address the impacts of global climate change and collaborating to reduce carbon emissions across the sector through the IPC EMMS programme. We believe that through the knowledge sharing and positive action, the entire postal industry will be able to lower its environmental impacts, thereby addressing stakeholder concerns about its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

Programme overview

The IPC EMMS programme was rolled out in 2009, capturing data and progress for the 2008 calendar and financial reporting year. IPC and the participating member posts set as their goals an ambitious challenge to cut the global postal sector’s carbon emissions by 20%, and to continue our expansion of the global postal sustainability programme to extend its impact as widely as possible across the world.

EMMS Scorecard

The sector scorecard of the EMMS programme contains overall information about the participant's carbon management proficiency, carbon performance indicators and emissions for the period 2008-2011.

Management Proficiency

The first section of the EMMS tool measures carbon management proficiency across ten areas aligned with IPC’s ‘plan-do-check-act’ management systems approach. This is measured through the use of a questionnaire, primarily taking into account qualitative aspects of each postal company’s carbon management proficiency (CMP).

Emissions

The quantitative aspect of carbon performance data has been evaluated across the six main categories of postal service activities: mail; parcels; express (national and international); logistics; retail outlets, and financial services.

Postal sector sustainability reports

Carbon management and environmental sustainability are issues that fall under the wider framework of a company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) framework. This section lists the sustainability reports of individual IPC members and other logistics operators.
