COP15 Copenhagen
IPC Reports Results of Carbon Measurement Study to Coincide with COP15 in Copenhagen
IPC published the results for carbon emissions for 20 of the world’s leading postal operators in the first ever Postal Sector Sustainability Report on 11 December 2009. The report was released in conjunction with the COP15 being hosted in Copenhagen during a live Webcast - which featured the CEOs from Deutsche Post, Groupe La Poste, the United States Postal Service, TNT, Posten Norden - that we have posted to the media section of our website.
Release of the report gained international attention and was featured in a number of key media outlets, including the Financial Times and Bloomberg TV.
"This is a momentous occasion, not just for us in the postal industry, but for business as a whole. As the first services sector to unite on a global scale to tackle its industry’s global carbon footprint, we’re demonstrating what can be done when organisations work together. Curbing CO2 emissions is something that concerns the entire industry, and it makes sense to take a sector approach to reaching a solution.”
Jean-Paul Bailly, Chairman of IPC and CEO of La Poste, France
“I welcome this global commitment by an entire service sector as an example of the vision and leadership required at all levels to effectively combat climate change, and I encourage the postal sector to continue to set an example.”
Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
In Line with International Standards
Working with Professor Alyson Warhurst of Warwick University, UK, a member of the United Nations Global Compact’s Human Rights Working Group and founding director of Maplecroft, IPC developed its Environmental Measurement and Monitoring System (EMMS) in line with international best practice standards including FTSE4Good, Dow Jones Sustainability index and the Global Reporting Initiative.
The programme provides a common carbon measurement and reporting framework for the global postal industry. It was developed following research among key stakeholders, including postal customers as to the type of environmental approach they wanted from the postal industry. Overall measures will include total CO2 in tonnes per 1000€ turnover; total CO2 in tonnes per kg post per km travelled and total CO2 in grams per item.
