A study to measure actual user experience with big data projects was published by Accenture in 2014. Accenture Analytics surveyed more than 1,000 respondents from companies operating across seven industries and headquartered in 19 countries that had completed at least one big data implementation.

Key findings from the report include:

  • Overall, big data was identified as extremely important or important by 94% of respondents. A correlation could be observed where the higher the revenue of a company the more important big data was perceived,
  • 57% of the respondents said they used consultants with their big data installations,
  • Organisations that relied on consultants, contractors and other external resources found their big data installations to be easier than those using only internal resources,
  • The three main challenges to implementing big data in companies are security (51%), budget (47%) and lack of talent to implement big data (41%).
