IPC Sustainability workshop
On 27-28 May 2019, the annual IPC workshop on sustainability was held at the IPC Offices in Brussels, Belgium. The workshop was attended by 11 posts (An Post, Austrian Post, Correos, CTT Portugal Post, Le Groupe La Poste, Posten Norge, PostNL, PostNord, Royal Mail Group, Swiss Post and US Postal Service).
Given the theme of sustainability of the IPC Annual Conference, which took place on 24 May in Bonn, Germany, and the ten years’ anniversary of the postal sector sustainability programme EMMS, IPC briefly reflected on the successes of the programme since it was launched in 2008 following stakeholder consultation. Since then, the group has improved its Carbon Management Proficiency score from 56% to an impressive 91% in 2018, combined with a carbon emissions reduction of 30%.
During the workshop, preliminary EMMS results were discussed, and participants also looked at the future developments of the postal collaborative sustainability programme to align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From the stakeholder research in 2017, with considerable contribution from the posts, seven key sustainability focus areas have been selected: Health and safety, Learning and development, Resource efficiency, Climate action, Air quality, Circular economy and Sustainable procurement. This SDG alignment process is seeing the EMMS programme evolve into the Sustainability Measurement and Monitoring System (SMMS). The reporting tools for the new programme will be disseminated in August 2019, for a baseline year data collection. Following the baseline year and first year of reporting new targets will be proposed to the IPC Board.
The workshop also welcomed Sandra Roling from The Climate Group. Roling provided insights into the organisation’s work with governments and businesses, and specifically on the EV100 and RE100 initiatives. The Climate Group urges companies to aim for decarbonisation by 2040. The objective of their corporate initiatives is to provide a collective voice for the business world, to bring down barriers to achieving goals such as 100% electric vehicles or 100% renewable energy.

Boost for local jobs through Australian built e-vehicle trial
In a boost for online shoppers and local manufacturing, Australia Post today announced the trial of a new Australian-built three-wheeled electric delivery vehicle.
Built in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, the new Stealth OzPOD, will service residents in the suburb of Lilydale over a five-week period, as Australia Post tests its features over different terrains, in a bid to complement existing electric vehicles in operational use. Australia Post General Manager Network Optimisation, Mitch Buxton, said Lilydale is a perfect area to trial the new vehicle, with locals increasingly embracing online shopping, and more small parcels being delivered than ever before. "We know that residents in Lilydale love online shopping. Health and beauty, fashion, and media are the most popular purchases among residents within the trial area," Mr Buxton said.
