bpost announces the temporary pause on postal shipments containing goods to the United States, effective from August 23, following a recent change in the customs and tariffs rules for the U.S., eliminating the De Minimis exemption for inbound goods.

The De Minimis exemption is a U.S. trade rule that allows low-value goods (below $800) to enter the country without paying customs, duties or taxes. It’s designed to simplify and speed up the import process for small shipments.

The US government has decided to suspend the De Minimis rule as of August 29. Consequence is that the previous exemption is removed, meaning all goods must have tariffs paid prior to arrival in the U.S., while the carrier will be responsible for ensuring compliance. The change in regulation considerably impacts international postal services and e-retailers using those services.

On August 15, the U.S. authorities shared the detailed requirements necessary for implementation. Due to the short timeframe to adapt to the new specific requirements, bpost will temporarily halt shipments to the United States until a compliant solution has been developed and implemented.

In consultation with international partners, bpost is working to develop a solution as quickly as possible and resume shipments to the United States. bpost regrets this exceptional measure, outside bpost's control, intended to protect customers.

The decision effects shipments containing goods from Belgium to United States. Letters without goods will not be affected.
