The Carbon Footprint Initiative is a working group of 13 major postal operators, bringing together sustainability & carbon accounting experts under the IPC umbrella. Developed in response to requests from IPC members and leading e-retailers, this collaborative group focuses on establishing reliable, standardized environmental reporting across the global postal supply chain.

To translate this shared framework into practical operations, the group developed and launched its technical solution: The IPC Carbon Footprint Calculator.

Practical Integration, Shared Standards

The initiative relies on regular, technical alignment between operators to ensure the calculator meets the operational realities of different postal networks. Instead of relying on broad industry averages, the tool enables operators to calculate end-to-end emissions at the individual item level.

Effect

Built through direct collaboration between sustainability and technical teams, the tool is designed to integrate with each post's current internal IT systems and carbon measurement practices.

The initiatives manages user training across participating networks to ensure consistent data quality as cross-border, item-level reporting rolls out.

A single, shared language across 13 major operators improves data consistency. As more operators join the initiative, the collective data pool becomes more comprehensive, providing a clearer picture of cross-border emissions across the sector.

Practical Value for Participants

Participate in the Initiative

Operators not yet involved are invited to join the Carbon Footprint Initiative. By participating, your organisation can access advanced carbon accounting capabilities, contribute to the growing network effect, and help standardize emissions tracking across the international postal network.
