From 24 July 2026, new customs rules will apply to shipments containing goods arriving in the United States and Puerto Rico. These updates affect how import duties are calculated and what information is required for customs clearance.

What is changing?

Import duties will depend on the product sent

The temporary 10% flat duty will no longer apply to postal shipments. Instead, duties will be based on the type of product, its customs classification, and its country of origin.

This means that different items in the same shipment may have different duty rates.

Some products may have extra charges

Certain products, such as steel, aluminum, automotive parts, and other goods covered by special US trade measures, may be subject to additional duties on top of the standard import duty.

More shipment information is required

To help US Customs process shipments, more detailed customs information is now needed. This includes:

accurate product descriptions

country of origin

declared value

the correct 10-digit HS (tariff) code for each item

Providing complete and accurate information can help avoid delays during customs clearance.

What does this mean for shippers?

Customers sending shipments containing goods to the United States should expect import charges to vary depending on the goods being shipped. It is also more important than ever to provide complete customs information when preparing shipments.

Omniva is working closely with its U.S. customs broker and duty calculation partner to support the new requirements. Our goal is to help customers continue shipping to the United States with prepaid duties and all required customs data in place.
