On January 1, 2026 , Royal Decree 1030/2022 will come into effect , mandating the replacement of current emergency triangles with new V16 beacons, which are connected and approved by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). These small, yellow, connected devices must be placed on the roof of the vehicle to indicate that it has stopped on the road or that its load has fallen onto it, without the need to leave the vehicle. These devices emit a high-intensity, 360º light intermittently and continuously for approximately 30 minutes and must have a battery life of at least 18 months.
The new devices, which must be kept in the vehicle's glove compartment, feature a real-time geolocation system with a unique IMEI number in each beacon. Therefore, in the event of a breakdown or accident, the beacon can be activated in seconds and connect to the DGT 3.0 platform to transmit its real-time location and alert other road users of the emergency via a flashing light. The pre-signaling beacons sold by Correos (the Spanish postal service) have data coverage until 2038 , as stipulated by regulations.
DGT procedures
Correos also makes it easy for all citizens to obtain the DGT environmental stickers required to access Low Emission Zones (LEZs), which are implemented in cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, in island areas, and in municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants that register high levels of pollution. Citizens can easily acquire these stickers and avoid potential fines in cities where access restrictions are in place for environmental reasons.
Currently, four types of stickers are available , depending on the vehicle's environmental impact: Zero Emissions (blue), Eco (blue and green), C Sticker (green), and B Sticker (yellow). They cost €5 and are available in two sizes , adapted to different vehicle types, making them an essential tool for vehicle identification in accordance with current regulations. These stickers can be purchased at any post office, through the postal service's rural delivery services, and at Correos Market.
The DGT's (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) services offered through the network of post offices throughout Spain include other procedures, such as obtaining a duplicate vehicle registration certificate, paying fines , and issuing vehicle reports. These services are part of the diversification of post office services, enabling residents in areas far from government offices to access them without having to travel long distances.
The collaboration with the DGT is part of the business diversification strategy outlined in Correos' Strategic Plan 2024-2028 , which aims to bring new products and services of general interest to all citizens, taking advantage of the extensive reach and full territorial coverage of its network of offices and rural service points throughout the country.
