CTT – Correios de Portugal has opened a new automated Operations Center in Rio de Mouro (Lisbon), representing an investment of approximately two million euros and ensuring 350 direct and indirect jobs.

In these new facilities, which include an automatic sorter (parcel sorting machine) with 60 outputs, a processing capacity of 6,000 items per hour is guaranteed, totaling approximately 126,000 items per day, thus significantly reinforcing CTT's express and parcel delivery operations. This Operational Center allows for the preparation of up to 300 distribution routes and will serve approximately 900,000 people. Currently occupying 5,000 square meters, there is the possibility of doubling this area if the operation justifies it.

According to João Bento, CEO of CTT, “the opening of this new Operational Center represents a strategic step to better serve the Greater Lisbon area, substantially reinforcing our parcel processing capacity through a fully automated sorter in which, interestingly, we are introducing for the first time in our Iberian network, a package individualization equipment (“singulator”) specifically designed for handling large volumes of B2C parcels. This investment allows us to respond more efficiently and with higher quality to the needs of our customers, clearly demonstrating our continuous commitment to the modernization and innovation of our operations.”

The new operational center strengthens CTT's installed capacity with the aim of reinforcing its parcel processing potential, driven by the growth of e-commerce and the company's increasing role as a leading e-commerce logistics operator in the Iberian Peninsula.

This is the second inauguration of automated operational centers in Portugal in the last year (the Algoz Operational Center became operational in July); in Spain, three new Operational Centers were inaugurated (Málaga, Murcia and Valencia). In the last 24 months, significant modernizations have also been carried out both in Portugal – in Coimbra, Braga, Maia and at MARL in Lisbon – and in Spain, with the installation of new sorters in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and San Fernando de Henares.

The current infrastructure comprises 75 operational centers in the Iberian Peninsula, 31 of which are fully automated, with 17 serving both countries, representing CTT's strong parcel handling capacity. During peak season, CTT processed approximately one million parcels per day in the Iberian Peninsula.
