Until now, Payshop services could only be paid for in cash. With this change, customers will initially be able to pay their bills with a bank card, and later on, they will be able to use this method for all services in the network.
Additionally, Payshop will now offer the SHOP&PAY service, a solution that allows customers to accept card payments for all purchases of goods and products sold at Payshop network establishments. All from a single terminal. This gives payment points more autonomy and efficiency in business management, while customers enjoy a simple and integrated payment experience. This contributes to broadening the acceptance of card payments in local commerce in Portugal. To this end, Payshop is gradually replacing all terminals with more modern and robust equipment, featuring an innovative payment system.
“We are sowing the seeds of growth, aiming to transform the reality of Payshop, our agents, and our customers. Paying for services with a card is a preference among the Portuguese. With this new payment method, we bring more flexibility and security to all activities. We will attract new customers and, clearly, increase sales among those who are already users of our services,” says Tiago Mota, CEO of Payshop.
Visa is one of Payshop's business partners on this journey, playing a key role in this movement to democratize digital payments: “This partnership with Payshop is strategic for Visa, accelerating card acceptance across a vast and diverse network of merchants. This transformation supports Visa's mission to drive the adoption of digital payments and financial inclusion in Portugal, while offering Payshop Agents and customers greater security, agility, and innovative payment methods capable of boosting the economy. By empowering Payshop Agents with POS terminals that accept Visa, Payshop positions itself as a key facilitator of in-person digital payments,” says Rita Mendes Coelho, Country Manager of Visa in Portugal.
Shift4 will provide the technology that enables card acceptance across the entire Payshop network. “This partnership embodies shared values between Payshop and Shift4, such as inclusion, innovation, and digitalization, and marks a decisive step in modernizing in-person payments in Portugal. Our technology now allows Payshop to offer a more agile, secure, and complete payment experience – for both agents and consumers. We believe this evolution exemplifies how innovation can democratize access to digital payments and drive the growth of the entire proximity ecosystem. We couldn't be more proud of the journey we've made together,” says Liliana Oliveira, Iberia Business Development Director at Shift4.
The SHOP&PAY solution will also be available to merchants in general, of all types and sizes, who are not Payshop Agents, increasing the reach of the company's in-person payment solutions.
The Payshop service is available in a national network of over 7,000 locations, 5,000 of which are Payshop Agents. The Payshop Agent Network consists of local commercial establishments such as stationery shops, tobacconists, kiosks, supermarkets, and others, chosen according to strict security and service quality criteria.
