Madrid, October 9, 2026 - Correos joins the celebration of World Post Day, which commemorates every October 9 the date of creation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the United Nations agency specializing in postal services, which was founded in Bern in 1874 and constitutes one of the first examples of multilateralism.
On this day, the 192 member countries of the UPU recognize the essential role played by postal operators around the world, not only as those responsible for providing the Universal Postal Service, but also as a global network that facilitates citizens' access to services of general interest.
According to UPU Director General Masahiko Metoki, this year's theme , "One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities," highlights the role of postal infrastructure as "much more than a system for the circulation of letters and correspondence." He adds, "It is one of the most enduring examples of international cooperation, built on a network of trust that connects people, communities, and nations through a shared commitment to universal service, confidence, and reliability."
Once again, the Director General of the UPU has expressed his gratitude to the millions of postal professionals whose dedication and expertise make the daily operation of this global network possible. He also encourages the entire sector to continue working together to build a postal infrastructure capable of generating new opportunities for governments, businesses, and, above all, for the people and communities it serves.
A constantly evolving global network.
The world postal network is consolidating its role as one of the largest networks of global cooperation and connection, serving individuals, businesses, public administrations, and governments. This year, World Post Day highlights the strength of an infrastructure built over generations, capable of evolving and adapting to the changing needs of society.
Today, more than 660,000 post offices and 4.6 million professionals in the sector , supported by digital technologies and international partnerships, make up one of the world's largest service ecosystems. This extensive network has become a gateway to essential services for citizens, businesses, and public administrations.
Human connection is one of the core values of the postal network worldwide. Every day, postal professionals act as trusted links between governments, businesses, and the people they serve. Their work helps businesses reach new markets, supports entrepreneurs, and enables rural communities with limited access to essential services and new opportunities.
In this process of renewal, postal operators continue to generate value for society. From providing public services to driving business growth through e-commerce, the postal network expands access to financial and healthcare services, fosters secure digital transformation, and continues to adapt to remain relevant for future generations.
Essential Services for Citizens.
Once again, Correos joins in the celebration of this day as it continues to advance in its transformation process aimed at strengthening its public mission . With the implementation of the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan and the amendment to the Postal Law , which recognizes its value as a strategic asset for social, territorial, and economic cohesion, Correos has become the ideal instrument of the State to offer essential services to all citizens, considered Services of General Economic Interest (SIEG).
Thanks to its extensive network, comprised of more than 2,300 offices and nearly 6,000 rural mail carriers and postmen across the country, the company facilitates access to postal services in rural areas and basic financial services , such as cash withdrawals and deposits, in municipalities with fewer than 500 inhabitants. Furthermore, it helps to make administrative procedures more accessible to all citizens and makes its human and material resources available to the State to strengthen its capacity to respond to emergencies or security needs .
In its aim to expand its role as a government service window , the Correos network allows citizens to carry out a growing number of procedures, from submitting and registering applications to the relevant authorities to paying fees and taxes, receiving subsidies, and handling certain transactions related to public debt. In this way, the company reinforces its public service mission and contributes to territorial cohesion, sustainability, and the well-being of society. Currently, it is also collaborating with the government on the regularization process for migrants.
This transformation reinforces Correos' position as a company with an essential public mission that extends beyond its activity as a postal operator. The company is thus advancing its role as a state instrument for bringing public services of general economic interest closer to citizens and responding to their evolving needs in a context marked by technological and social changes.
To celebrate World Post Day in 2026, a variety of activities have been organized for employees and the public, this year focusing on telegraphy, which is closely linked to the history of the postal service. From October 5th, the exhibition “From Optical Telegraph to Teleprinter: Evolution of Different Telegraphic Communication Systems” can be visited in the lobby of the Clara Campoamor Post Office building in Madrid, with guided tours available on Wednesdays. Furthermore, on October 14th , Vicente Rubio, president of the Association of Friends of Telegraphs, will give a lecture entitled “ Electric Telegraphy: Origin, International Context, and the International Telecommunication Union , ” which will be held in the auditorium of the company's corporate headquarters in Madrid.
