Together with the Lithuanian Police, the Customs Department and the State Border Guard Service, Lietuvos Paštas has signed a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening the control of postal items and more effectively preventing the distribution of drugs. The agreement provides for closer cooperation between institutions, more efficient exchange of information and the application of advanced risk assessment and parcel screening solutions.

Postal parcels are moving faster and in greater quantities than ever before. Along with this process, challenges are growing – parcels are becoming not only a convenient way to shop, but also a channel increasingly exploited by criminal groups.

In light of these trends, four institutions of the country – the Lithuanian Police, the Customs Department, the State Border Guard Service and the Lithuanian Post – have signed a cooperation agreement, committing to work together to strengthen control in the postal service chain. The institutions agree that traditional measures are no longer sufficient, and the response must be faster, more accurate and more coordinated. This agreement marks a new stage – a transition to even closer interdepartmental cooperation and the application of advanced measures in order to prevent the spread of drugs amid the rapid growth of parcel flows. In order to overcome these challenges, the partners will develop and apply advanced risk assessment models, develop data analysis and artificial intelligence solutions, strengthen parcel screening mechanisms, and increase the integration of information systems.

The agreement aims not only to detect and seize prohibited substances, but also to consistently reduce their supply in Lithuania. The partners plan to carry out joint inspections, more actively use dog teams, promptly exchange information about suspicious shipments, and ensure control based on inter-institutional risk analysis.

According to the heads of the institutions that signed the agreement, an effective fight against drugs is impossible today without a close partnership between the public and private sectors. The involvement of Lithuania Post will allow for better risk management in the postal chain, and the coordinated activities of law enforcement institutions will help respond more quickly to new threats.
