Hermes Germany has continued infrastructure expansion by starting construction on a new distribution centre near Bremen, as well as celebrating the topping-out ceremony of a new main transhipment base in the Bavarian city of Ansbach. Operations in Bremen will start in October 2020, handling more than 50,000 shipments every day. The new high-performance depot will be created as a transhipment point for parcels in the region with more than 100 employees handling items. The exact location is in Weyhe, approximately 15km south of Bremen’s city centre. The parcel carrier has already opened three logistics centres this year in Hamburg, Leipzig and Greven, near Münster/Osnabrück Airport. The new site planned by the Bremen-based company Peper & Söhne Projekt GmbH, in cooperation with Goldbeck Nord GmbH, is also designed for further increases in consignments. Moreover, a double-digit million amount will be invested in the new depot, making the distribution centre an integral part of the €300 million infrastructure program that Hermes initiated to expand its nationwide logistics network. Christian Helbig, Head of Real Estate & Facility Management at Hermes Germany, explained: "The new building in Weyhe is of enormous strategic importance for us. With the new distribution centre, we can supply the city of Bremen and the surrounding area even faster and more efficiently.
