Vienna parcel logistics center becomes automation and innovation hub

It sorts and sorts and sorts: In less than a year, the "Robin" (short for ROBotic INduction) robot has processed more than a million parcels, significantly relieving its human colleagues of a physically demanding task. "Robin" is just the first step in a series of developments to transform the Vienna Parcel Logistics Center into an automation and innovation hub.

Peter Umundum, Deputy General Director, Board Member for Parcel & Logistics: "Our "Robin" robot has processed over a million parcels in less than a year. This is strong evidence of how far we have already put our automation strategy into practice. We are also using AutoUnloaders to unload trucks and automatic roll container tippers on a large scale. We are currently testing another robot arm for heavy parcels in Vienna, and the first autonomous industrial trucks will also be launched soon. Our Vienna Parcel Logistics Center is thus finally becoming an automation and innovation hub!"

MECHANICAL MUSCLE POWER WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
"Robin" is a placement robot that can place up to 1,500 packages per hour on the input line of the small parts sorter. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), "Robin" can better detect the size, weight, and position of a package in order to calculate the required lifting force.

An automatic roll container tipper and a connected singulation system supply the placement robot with small packages. At the end of the conveyor belt, an image of each package is taken and analyzed using algorithms for position, dimensions, orientation, shape, and packaging type. Based on these characteristics, "Robin" decides where to position the pneumatic gripper, how many suction cups to activate, and how much lifting force is required.
