Madrid, September 17, 2026 - Coinciding with the celebration of the 8th edition of Green Postal Day , postal operators around the world are progressing as planned to achieve their goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 .
Postal operators have reduced their total annual emissions by more than 41% [1] compared to 2008 baseline levels, thus getting closer to their target of achieving a 50% reduction by 2030.
To achieve this result, postal operators have focused both on ensuring that the electricity used in postal facilities comes from renewable energy sources and on progressively replacing their postal fleet of 735,000 vehicles with vehicles powered by alternative fuels.
Currently, 35% of the global postal fleet consists of alternative fuel vehicles , and 28% is electric [2] . Postal operators have therefore already achieved their 2030 fleet electrification target five years ahead of schedule. Furthermore, 38% of the electricity used in postal facilities comes from renewable sources [3] .
While postal operators initially focused on reducing last-mile CO₂ emissions by increasing the proportion of alternative delivery vehicles, attention is now shifting to long-haul transport as well . Decarbonizing this type of transport will become increasingly crucial to reducing the sector's environmental impact. The number of large electric vans and trucks in postal fleets is growing. Pilot projects for air freight powered by alternative fuels are also being developed. Industry actions also include more efficient loading and improved road route planning to reduce the environmental footprint and generate cost savings.
Furthermore, the efforts of postal operators are widely recognized by e-commerce sellers worldwide. According to a survey of 2,500 small and medium-sized e-commerce businesses in 19 countries [4] , 70% of them were satisfied with postal operators' sustainability management in the area of cross-border shipments.
Global postal sector goals for 2030
Correos, at the forefront of sustainability in the international postal sector.
Correos is making a significant contribution to achieving the collective sustainability goals of the global postal sector, leading the way in some areas where the public company is very advanced.
For example, with the latest additions of electric motorcycles and vans, Correos is consolidating its position as one of the largest zero-emission and eco-friendly fleets in the Spanish distribution sector, with more than 4,000 sustainable vehicles (electric, hybrid, and compressed natural gas), representing nearly 29% of its total delivery fleet. Furthermore, it has set an even more ambitious goal.
that of the sector: to ensure that 50% of its fleet consists of vehicles with alternative technologies by 2028 , 25% of which are electric , as established in its Strategic Plan 2024-2028.
Furthermore, for years Correos has included sustainability criteria in its tenders for the external contracting of medium- and long-distance routes , prioritizing bids that include the use of trailers, trucks, and vans with the ECO label. In this way, Correos is promoting the transition to sustainable mobility, both for last-mile delivery and long-distance routes.
Furthermore, since 2018, 100% of the electricity purchased by Correos for its buildings has come from renewable energy sources with a guarantee of origin, which means avoiding the emission of more than 24,000 tons of CO2 per year.
The company is also making a strong commitment to generating photovoltaic energy for self-consumption at its logistics centers. With the launch of the “Correos Solar” project, the company plans to install solar power plants at 21 operational centers throughout Spain, with a total capacity of 4.1 MW. The first center to implement the system was the Vallecas CTA (Madrid), the company's largest logistics center, which already has an installation of 960 high-efficiency photovoltaic plants that generated 677,250.76 kWh of electricity in 2025.
In 2026, the CTA (Centro de Transporte Artística) in Sant Cugat del Vallés (Barcelona) was added to the network. Its roof now features 627 high-efficiency photovoltaic modules and three 150 kW inverters, with a total capacity of 450 kW. This infrastructure will generate approximately 577.4 MWh of renewable energy annually, covering roughly 25% of the center's energy needs. The production of this clean energy will prevent the emission of nearly 140 tons of CO₂ per year, thus contributing to reducing Correos' carbon footprint and fulfilling its environmental commitments.
“Correos Solar” will be expanded with photovoltaic installations at other strategic centers such as the Colón CTA in Barcelona , as well as at logistics centers in Valencia, Alicante, and Seville , adding a combined capacity of approximately 1,927 kW. This deployment will continue with a third phase incorporating new centers in Vitoria, Palma de Mallorca, Madrid (Rampa 7), Málaga, Tenerife, and Las Palmas , with the aim of significantly increasing the renewable energy generation capacity of the company's logistics network.
With “Correos Solar”, the postal and parcel delivery company is making steady progress in transforming its infrastructure towards a more efficient, resilient and environmentally friendly model, within the framework of the environmental strategy established in its 2024-2028 Sustainability Plan and its 2024-2028 Strategic Plan.
Correos has also deployed a nationwide energy management system in its offices, optimizing electricity consumption and improving operational efficiency. Currently, 571 post offices have implemented this solution to reduce energy consumption for lighting and air conditioning, achieving annual energy savings of 1,331,000 kWh , representing an average annual saving of over 20%.
In addition, Correos has launched a Circular Economy Action Plan to advance its goal of achieving "zero waste" certification for 100% of its logistics centers by 2028. Currently , Correos achieves recycling rates exceeding 90% of its waste .
Correos welcomes the progress made and joins the 23 postal operators worldwide actively participating in this year's "Green Postal Day" : An Post (Ireland), bpost (Belgium), Correos (Spain), Croatia Post (Croatia), CTT Portugal (Portugal), DHL Group (Germany), Cyprus Post (Cyprus), Iceland Post (Iceland), La Poste Groupe (France), Malta Post (Malta), Omniva (Estonia), Österreichische Post (Austria), POST Luxembourg (Luxembourg), Posta Romana (Romania), Poste Italiane (Italy), Posti (Finland), PostNL (Netherlands), PostNord (Sweden), Pos Malaysia (Malaysia), Royal Mail (United Kingdom), Swiss Post (Switzerland), Thailand Post (Thailand) and USPS (United States).
