700 CO2-free electric vehicles already in use – Vienna as a pioneer among European cities
Austrian Post is on the verge of reaching a historic milestone: By the end of the year, all deliveries in Vienna will be carried out exclusively on foot, by bicycle, or by electric vehicle, thus producing zero CO2 emissions. Around 700 electric vehicles are already in use today, significantly more than half of the nearly 1,100 vehicles currently in operation in Vienna. With the complete transition to e-mobility, Vienna will become the first European metropolis to offer completely CO2-free last-mile delivery of parcels, letters, brochures, newspapers, and magazines . Austrian Post is investing around €32 million in charging infrastructure and electric vehicles to achieve this.
Walter Oblin, CEO, Österreichische Post AG: "Even in challenging times, we are staying true to our course and consistently pursuing our sustainability strategy. With the comprehensive switch to e-mobility in Vienna, our federal capital will become the first European metropolis of this size where all mail will be delivered exclusively on foot, by bicycle, or by electric vehicle. This investment underscores our commitment and is an important milestone on the path to a climate-friendly future."
Peter Umundum, Board Member for Parcel & Logistics, Österreichische Post AG: "With around 700 electric vehicles, more than half of our fleet in Vienna has already been converted to e-mobility. By the end of the year, we will install the final charging stations and put another 400 electric vehicles into operation in Vienna. This will mean that more than two million residents will be served CO2-free on the last mile by the end of the year – this is unique in Europe!"
Post delivery in Vienna
Letters, brochures, newspapers, and magazines are delivered via a total of 17 delivery bases within the Vienna metropolitan area, plus three parcel delivery bases within Vienna and a location in Hagenbrunn, located to the north. When fully operational, over 1,500 delivery drivers will be on the move every day, producing zero CO2 emissions , on foot, by e-bike, e-moped, or e-van.
EV drive and photovoltaics postal vehicles as a rolling power plant
Austrian Post's electric fleet is not only by far the largest in the country, it is also growing rapidly. Since 2022, only electric vehicles have been purchased for delivery, with around 1,000 new electric vehicles being added each year. The Austrian-wide electric fleet currently consists of over 5,000 electric vehicles. By 2030, the Swiss Post will convert its entire delivery fleet of 10,000 vehicles to electric drive and deliver all shipments completely CO2 - free.
Austrian Post already produces some of the electricity required for this itself: Photovoltaic systems with a total output of over 18 MWP have been installed at 34 locations across Austria, bringing the share of electricity from renewable energy sources to more than 20 percent. This makes Austrian Post one of the largest operators of these systems in Austria – excluding energy suppliers – and could theoretically already power 3,000 electric vehicles with solar energy. The vision for the future: an electric fleet that can store the energy and feed it back into the grid.
