On Wednesday, 28 November, PostNL and the local authorities celebrated the kick off of the construction of a new parcel sorting centre at the business park Dordtse Kil II in Dordrecht. Alderman Maarten Burggraaf and Director Strategy Parcels Coen Schut symbolically drove the first pile into the ground at the new sustainable site. The new location in Dordrecht will make a contribution to increasing the capacity for the sorting and distribution of parcels.

Coen Schut, Director Strategy Parcels at PostNL: ‘Consumers have totally embraced the ease of online shopping. Many online stores choose PostNL to sort and deliver their parcels, of which we're very proud. In the coming year, PostNL will open three new parcel sorting centres in the Netherlands, to optimally arrange the delivery process in the growing market for parcel deliveries, including this sustainable building in Dordrecht.’ Maarten Burggraaf, the City Council Member for Economic Affairs: ‘PostNL is well known in Dordrecht. We are delighted the company chose to build a new sorting centre in our industrial area Dordtse Kil II. And we are also pleased about the ambitions concerning sustainability. We welcome the new sustainable property and the fact PostNL will offer employment to 400 people. This contributes to our own ambition to realize 4000 new jobs in Dordrecht.

BREEAM certificate

PostNL intends for this parcel sorting centre to achieve the Outstanding BREEAM certificate. With this goal in mind, PostNL is investing in the most sustainable materials, the installation of solar panels, and waste heat recovery systems. In addition, the building will not use gas. Thus, this building will be one of the most sustainable logistics buildings.

Expansion of the logistics network

This new PostNL location in Dordrecht will be part of a new network that currently consists of a total of 22 parcel sorting centres in the Netherlands and six locations in Belgium. From these locations, the parcel deliverers head out, seven days a week, to deliver parcels everywhere in the Netherlands and in Belgium. PostNL will open three new parcel sorting centres in the Netherlands in 2019, including this location in Dordrecht.

Good for the region

This parcel sorting centre is good for the region: it will offer employment to roughly 400 people. PostNL will start using the sorting centre in August 2019 and will deliver parcels to the Dordrecht and Zwijndrecht region from there.
